Effect of climate-changing: water crisis in Tarai

Churia hill range is losing its water recharge and soil erosion conserving capacity, subsequently the Tarai  is facing not only underground water crisis but drought and floods. This is the main cause of human exploitation of Chure.

Chure Forest

A group of youth arrived in Kathmandu, the capital city of the federal republic of Nepal from Tarai ( Province no 2 ) to draw the attention of the federal government about the crisis of water in their villages. Madhesh is located at the adjoining southern plain of fragile Churiya or Siwalik mountain range covered with forest and populated areas, geographically included hills and valleys. They were staging a protest gathering in Maitighar Mandala a well-known protest venue in the city. According to them, the situation is going worsening since last few years.

Siwalik hill range is expanse Pakistan to Brahmaputra river of India is the youngest hill range of the Indian peninsula. The part of Siwalik in Nepal known as Chure covers 12.78 percent of the total land of the country.

Churia is stretching below of the Mahabharata hills of Nepal and badly affecting by human exploitation. The hillocks of Churiya range are naturally composed of weak structure and natural conserver of southern Tarai, the expansion of genetic plain. Youths were concerned that the exploitation of Churia is the cause of the water  crisis in low land.

Most of the Churia region is already deforested with the growing population. This destructive move is not stopped but going on in different ways. Nepal government has some projects to protect the Churia range and launched "President Chure Conservation Programme" since 2009, but efforts are not effective or insufficient.

Dozers and excavators are legally or illegally breaking the hills and exploiting stones and soil for other proposes. Ultimately, Churia is rapidly losing its natural   aspect. The havoc is continuously pressing to lose the soil and water-conserving character of Churia. Consequently, the plain (Tarai) is leading to a great crisis of water not only for irrigation but for drinking too.

Manoj Majhi, who came to Pokhara, a hill city of Nepal to search seasonal job from Sptari, a district from eastern Tarai said that the hand pumps dried up and boring pumps are also not pulling sufficient water. It is the meaning that the underground water level is going very low level.

The changing of climate is another major cause for the problem of the Tarai region. Seasons are not following in regular routine that leading to drought, heavy rain, floods. The drastic change in climate is continuously destroying the agricultural system. Ultimately there is not any immediate way except Chure protection to relieve thirsty Tarai.
